Mahjong: Understanding the Game, the Tiles, and the Sets

Are you curious about all the buzz with Mahjong?  Mahjong is centuries old, but it’s currently having a major "modern" moment. If you are into strategy or just friendly competition, getting started doesn't have to be hard. Understanding the game, the tiles, and the sets will get you started in the right direction.

Strategy, Patterns, and Luck

Mahjong is a strategy, building patterns and some luck. There are several variations and one of the most popular in the US is American mahjong. This version has it’s own rules, accessories and tile groups, which is why choosing the right mahjong set is important.

American Mahjong

American mahjong has become popular recently with it’s new colorful, artistic and themed tile sets. There are 152 tiles, and once you learn their "personalities," the game becomes fun and exciting.

Here’s what’s  in a standard American set:

  • The Suits: Bams, Craks, and Dots (the bread and butter of your hand). They are like the numbered suits in a deck of cards.
  • The Non-Numbered Tiles - The Winds: East, South, West, and North, The Dragons: Red, Green, and White. These do not have numbers and they work differently.
  • Flowers & Seasons: Bonus tiles that add a splash of flair.
  • Jokers: The "wild cards" that make the American game unique.

It’s All About the Tiles

The variety of tiles is what makes the game so engaging. Each tile has its own role. Part of the game's strategy is to match the suits on the NMJL card to win. The National Mah Jongg League produces a new card of winning hands each year. The main objective of the game is to be the first player to form a hand of 14 tiles that matches exactly one of the hands on the NMJL card. Some common strategies are organizing tiles by suits and numbers, like when playing card games. Look for patterns like odd, even, or consecutive runs rather than a single hand. Remember to keep your poker face so you don’t give away your hand right away.   Once the player has a valid hand, they call out Mahjong! to win the round.

Hands are grouped into sections like:

  • 2468
  • 369
  • Consecutive Run
  • Quints
  • Like Numbers
  • Winds & Dragons
  • Singles & Pairs

It’s More Than Just a Game

Mahjong is more than just a game, it is a mental workout. It’s about creating stories told over table, creating winning hand and creating memories.

Grab a mahjong set and start building your first winning hand.
